About the NPP:
The NPP was founded in 1972, by musical director Andres Petrov. Mr. Petrov served as musical directors for the first ten years of the NPP’s existence, and provided much of the vision for the orchestra going forward.
The NPP is intended not only to provide an excellent classical concert experience for the listening public, but to provide valuable support for the community it serves.
The NPP’s mission statement outlines specific education and outreach goals for connecting inner city youth and low income residents with the resources and opportunities to hear and enjoy the greatest music of the Western Tradition. We hold our community mission in the highest priority, and are constantly striving to effect positive change in the North Pittsburgh district.
While our community engagement efforts are always evolving, some annual NPP events have been around since Andres Petrov. Our annual events include:
The NPP Summer Camp for Teens
-an intensive musical training program for aspiring classical musicians
-individual and group lessons
-personal tutorship from professional musicians
-mentorship from musicians in the community
-culminates in a final concert for participating youths to showcase their talent
Philharmonic in the Park
-an annual concert series held every Friday night in July, weather permitting
-live orchestral music in the McCarty City Park
-picnicking and lawn seating
-for these special summer concerts, the NPP musical director chooses a program which combines great classical compositions with popular film scores and other more modern pieces.
